INSTITUTIONAL PROFILE

Mbeya University of Science and Technology traces its origins to 1986, when the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania established Mbeya Technical College (MTC) to build national capacity in technical education. Initially, the College focused on training Full Technicians at Certificate Level (FTC), supported through the Russia–Tanzania Technical Cooperation Programme.

In response to changing national needs and the growing demand for advanced skills in science and technology, the institution was elevated to Mbeya Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) in July 2005, following the National Council for Technical Education Establishment Order of 2004. During this period, the Institute expanded its academic scope, introduced degree programmes, and recorded a significant increase in student enrolment, marking a major step toward becoming a comprehensive higher learning institution.

Building on these achievements, the institution attained full university status on 20th August 2013 after being awarded a Charter, officially becoming Mbeya University of Science and Technology (MUST). This transformation marked a new phase of institutional growth, academic excellence, and strengthened contribution to national development.

MUST is a public higher learning institution located in Mbeya, in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. The University is dedicated to advancing knowledge and skills in science, engineering, and technology through competency-based education, research, and consultancy. Its core mission is to promote innovation, industrial development, and sustainable socio-economic transformation at both national and global levels.

The University places strong emphasis on practical and industry-oriented training, supported by robust partnerships with industry and active community engagement. This approach ensures that graduates are equipped with hands-on experience, entrepreneurial competencies, and problem-solving skills required to address real-world challenges.

In addition to its Main Campus in Mbeya, the University operates two satellite campuses: MUST Rukwa Campus and MUST Mtwara Campus College of Technical Education. These campuses extend access to quality technical and higher education and strengthen the University’s national reach.

Academically, the University offers a diverse portfolio of 81 accredited programmes at diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels, including Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD degrees. Tanzania has 52 Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), 20 are publicly owned and 32 are privately owned and have been approved by the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU). Further, there are 1130 registered and accredited institutions providing technical and vocational education and training through the National Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (NACTVET).

The United Republic of Tanzania (In swahili: Jamhuri you Muungano wa Tanzania) is an East African country. It is bordered by Kenya and Uganda to the north; Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west; and Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique to the south. To the east, it is bounded by the Indian Ocean.

In 1964, the union of Zanzibar island, and mainland Tanganyika created the United Republic of Tanzania (Tanzania). Tanganyika became independent from the British in December 1961, and Zanzibar gained freedom through a revolution on 12th January 1964.

The population of Tanzania is estimated at approximately 70.5 million and its official languages are Swahili (national) and English.

Wrocław University of Science and Technology

Wrocław University of Science and Technology (Wrocław Tech) was established in 1945, mainly as a result of the involvement of the academic staff of the now-defunct Technical University of Lviv and the Jan Kazimierz University in Lviv, who adapted the destroyed buildings of the German School of Technology – Technische Hochschule.

Today we continue the tradition of these prominent Polish universities and develop in close cooperation with the leading companies of Lower Silesia. We are one of the largest and best technical universities in the country, one regularly ranked among the best in the national rankings.

The first rector of the then merged University of Technology and University of Wrocław was Professor Stanisław Kulczyński (1945-1951). Since then, the university has already seen as many as fourteen successors of the eminent academic. Currently, the tertiary institution is governed by Professor Arkadiusz Wójs, whose second term of office will last until the end of August 2028.

Facts and figures

Fourth place among technical universities, seventh place in the general ranking, and – as usual – first place in Lower Silesia. These are the results of Wrocław University of Science and Technology in the ranking of universities conducted by the Perspektywy Foundation in 2025.
In the same ranking, the Civil Engineering degree programme (Faculty of Civil Engineering) and Chemical and Process Engineering (Faculty of Chemistry) were recognised as Poland’s best. We are one of the biggest employer in Wrocław.
A large number of our graduates find employment already while pursuing their degree programmes, and 70% of them find jobs after three months, at the latest, after receiving their diplomas. Graduates of Wrocław University of Science and Technology are ranked third in Poland in terms of median earnings.
Since May 2019, the university’s Doctoral School has been in operation, educating doctoral students in twelve research disciplines.
Two researchers from the university belong to the elite group of the winners of the so-called “Polish Nobel Prize”, the Foundation for Polish Science Award: Professor Marek Samoć and Professor Marcin Drąg (2019).
In recent years, we have funnelled several hundred million PLN to the purchase of research instrumentation, machinery, and apparatus.
Thanks to our innovative research, we have been a leader in innovation for years, and in this respect, we rank top in the reports of the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland. On average, the university files over 100 invention and utility model applications a year.
Every year, we sign further cooperation agreements with domestic and foreign companies, as well as scientific and local government units. The university’s closest business partners include Volvo, Nokia, Microsoft, IBM, KGHM, LG, and Credit Suisse.
We have cooperation agreements with European universities, on both American continents, in Asia, Africa, and even Australia.
Academic staff from Wrocław University of Science and Technology work closely with researchers from all over the world. The result of these activities is 500 jointly developed papers published every year.
Every year, a few hundred students and employees of the university take advantage of international exchange programmes.
Wrocław University of Science and Technology is a member of the European University Association, the European Society for Engineering Education and Unite! alliance.
One of the biggest attractions, not only of the university itself but also of Wrocław as a whole, is the “Polinka” cable car, which connects the Geocentrum complex with the Main Campus. It is Poland’s only cross-river urban cable car operating on a shuttle basis.

Republic of Poland

Poland follows the Bologna scheme and most of its tertiary level programmes are made of two cycles: a three-year bachelor’s degree followed by a two-year master’s degree. Some master’s degrees are however granted after a unique long-cycle programme, lasting between four and six years (Ex: five years for pharmacy, six year for medicine). Doctoral programmes are achieved in about three years. The diploma of primary school teachers requires three years of study within a teacher training college. Vocational education is handled by post-secondary school (szkoła policealna) with programmes lasting two and a half years.

In total, there are approximately 457 universities and collegiate-level institutions of higher education in Poland, including 131 government-funded and 326 privately owned universities, with about 1.3 million enrolled students as of 2024. According to the March 18, 2011 Act of the Polish Parliament, the universities are divided into categories based on their legal status and level of authorization.

There are forty publicly funded and two private universities considered classical, granting doctoral degrees on top of bachelor’s and master’s degrees in at least ten fields of knowledge. The remaining universities are divided according to their educational profile usually reflected in their differing names. Academy is used for institutions which focus on fine arts, music and drama. The technical universities specialize in engineering and the physical sciences. (The name refers to the subjects taught; they are not technical schools.)

In total, there are 24 cities in Poland, with between one and eight state-funded universities each. Among the top are Warsaw, Kraków, Poznań, Łódź and Wrocław. The Polish names of listed universities are given in brackets, followed by a standard abbreviation (if commonly used or if existent). Note that some of the institutions might choose to translate their own name as university in English, even if they do not officially have the Polish-language equivalent name of uniwersytet.
